To be completely honest I had never heard of the Bay Harbor golf course as someone who lives in Ontario, just 45 minutes away from Toronto. But my wife had recently become obsessed with Mackinac Island and had been planning a trip for the following summer but we weren't ready to pull the trigger, we were looking for a sign. That sign was from Boyne Golf when they had emailed me saying that I had won a $500 USD voucher to play at any of their courses from the Toronto Golf Show. Ken and his team have been extremely helpful in making sure our tee times were in order and answered all of our questions without hesitation.

When I first heard Bay Harbor Golf Course in Petoskey, Michigan, described as the "Pebble Beach of the Midwest," I was intrigued but skeptical. Could a course in the Midwest really live up to such a lofty comparison? After spending the day playing the Links/Quarry tracks from Boyne Golf, I can confidently say that Bay Harbor offers a golf experience that is nothing short of exceptional. From the stunning views to the meticulously maintained greens, every moment on the course felt like a special occasion.

Arrival and First Impressions | 5/5

Driving into Bay Harbor, the first thing that struck me was the natural beauty surrounding the course. Nestled along the shores of Lake Michigan, the setting is peaceful and inviting when you see neighbours driving by in their family sized golf carts! The clubhouse, with its classic yet modern design, sets the tone for a high-quality golf experience. The staff greeted me warmly, making the check-in process smooth and welcoming.

The course layout immediately impressed me. Designed to challenge golfers of all skill levels, it balances strategic play with breathtaking scenery. The fairways are wide but guarded by well-placed bunkers and water hazards that demand thoughtful shot selection.

The Course Design and Playability | 5/5

Bay Harbor’s course design is a masterclass in blending natural features with golf architecture. The Links offers a unique challenge, and the views never get old. I found myself pausing often to take in the panoramic vistas of Lake Michigan and the surrounding forests.

The greens are fast and true, rewarding precise approach shots. I especially enjoyed the par-5 holes, where the combination of elevation changes and water hazards made club selection critical. The course’s conditioning was impeccable, with lush fairways and smooth putting surfaces that made every round enjoyable.

For example, on the 7th hole, a long par-4 with a narrow fairway bordered by towering pines, I had to carefully plan my tee shot to avoid the trees and set up a clear approach to the green. This hole perfectly captures the balance of challenge and beauty that defines Bay Harbor. Walkers beware, this course may not be for you.

Amenities and Services | 4.5/5

Beyond the course itself, Bay Harbor offers excellent amenities that enhance the overall experience. The practice facilities include a driving range, putting green, and short game area, all maintained to high standards. I spent some time warming up before my rounds, which helped me get into the right mindset. There was a food truck on-site that offered a variety of snacks but just wish there were more vegetarian options available.

The Pro Shop was stocked with a ton of great clothes, souvenir's and gear. They had some really cool Greyson shirts but unfortunately they didn't have my size. I ended up walking away with a few Ball Markers for some coworkers and Hat, Ball and Towel

Unfortunately we were running short on time and did not have the chance to stay and dine in the club house after (which is something i often most look forward to) If they have a vegetarian or pescatarian option available.

Personal Highlights from My Visit

One of my favorite moments was playing the 18th hole just before sunset. Over looking the water as my playing partners from Chicago stare down the 40 foot putt. Colin lines up his ball, stands over it and hits it... silence 40 ft, 30, 20, 10, 5, slows down, looks like its going to stop short and then, it falls in. The clubhouse over looking from above break out in a roar and high fives are celebrated!

I also appreciated the friendly atmosphere among players and staff. The starter was a funny older gentleman that had some good tips and suggestions on where to take in the views. Everyone I met was passionate about golf and eager to share tips or stories. This sense of community made the experience even more special. Special shout out to Ken Griffin from Boyne and the people at Toronto Golf Show for the experience!

Playing golf at Bay Harbor in Petoskey was more than just a round of golf; it was an experience that combined sport, nature, and hospitality in a way few courses manage. The course’s beauty, challenge, and top-notch service earned it a well-deserved five-star rating in my book.
